Kansas City Chiefs linebacker and former University of Maine football player Jovan Belcher reportedly shot himself this morning in the parking lot of Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Police say that before he headed to the stadium, he shot and killed his girlfriend in a nearby home.

The 25-year-old played football for the University of Maine from 2005 to 2009. He was a first-time All-American in 2009 and graduated that same year. Police say Belcher got into an argument with his 22-year-old girlfriend around 7 a.m. The woman's mother was at the home, along with the couple's baby daughter, and she told police that it was just before 8am when Belcher shot his girlfriend multiple times. She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Belcher left the home and went to the Chiefs' practice facility, where he was met by team executives. They reportedly pleaded with him to stop the violence, but it was to no avail. Belcher died of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. There's no word yet on what might have sparked this morning's murder/suicide.
