The legislature today approved the Governor’s emergency measure  to temporarily keep confidential the names of Maine residents who have permits to carry concealed guns.

Governor Paul Lepage applauded lawmakers for their quick action and immediately signed the bill. The measure was aimed at preventing publications from releasing personal information about gun owners and was prompted by a request made by the Bangor Daily News.

The paper had requested that area police departments provide names, addresses, and ages of all the states permit holders, under the Freedom of Access law. The paper had submitted its request, knowing that a pending bill would forbid such disclosures. After much public furor, the paper withdrew its request, stating that it never planned to publish anyone’s name.

The bill easily drew the two-thirds it needed to take effect immediately.
